아마존도 EPUB 전자책 포맷을 활용할 것인가?

최근 해외 출판계 소식통에 의하면 아마존이 기존의 자체 포맷(MOBI./AZW) 이외에 EPUB도 적용하는 방향으로 준비 중이라고 한다. 개인적으로 얼마전에 우연히 Kindle의 변환 툴(Kindle Generator)을 통해서 AZW가 EPUB와 거의 같은 압축파일 구조로 Export되게 만든 것을 보고 대충 짐작은 했었지만 아래의 영문 내용과 같이 일부 출판사들이 최근 아마존과의 면담을 통해서 확인했다고 한다. "Four publishers in the last week have confirmed that Amazon has indeed told them they now have an option to submit eBooks to be listed in the Amazon store in ePub format. Two of the companies we spoke with are very big i...n the publishing world and spoke to us regarding this new development during an interview in the last few days on a totally different subject. With many companies all telling us the same thing off the record it is confirmed that the Amazon is moving in this direction."
최근 아마존이 EPUB와 PDF 전자책만 서비스하는 OverDrive를 통해서 Kindle 전자책을 도서관에 서비스한다고 발표한 것도 같은 맥락으로 보인다.무엇보다도 금년에 EPUB가 EPUB3로 개정되면서 HTML5 지원 기능(멀티미디어)이 강화되는 전자책 시장환경을 따라가기 위해서 아마존의 어쩔 수 없는 선택이라고도 볼 수 있다. 언제가 될지 모르겠지만 만약 아마존도 EPUB를 채택한다면 미국은 전자책 표준화가 완성되면서 디지털출판으로의 전환 속도가 더욱 가속화 될 것이다.
